My friend Marion Le Gall stops by to talk about Locusts and Snails! We also discuss her travels from everywhere from France, Texas, Australia, Africa to Arizona.

We talk about her close calls with rattlesnakes, deadly ants, kangaroos, and the most dangerous creature, Americans. We also talk about her research into crop protection and the nutrition behind the behavior of some agricultural insects. This is an amazing conversation with a brilliant human being.

Marion Le Gall is a nutritional ecologist who currently works as an instructor in the School of Life Sciences and Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University (ASU) in Tempe, Arizona. Her research focuses on understanding how generalist herbivores balance multiple and changing nutrient needs and how it affects their behavior and performance.

She uses a physiological approach known as the Geometric Framework to gain insights into the mechanisms underlying ecological patterns and processes. Le Gall received her Ph.D. in Entomology from Texas A&M University in 2014. Her dissertation research focused on the diet-mixing in a generalist herbivore and the trade-offs between nutrient and allelochemical regulation.

She then worked as a postdoctoral research associate at ASU’s Social Insect Research Group and Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability, studying the ecophysiology of the Senegalese locust. From 2014 to 2016, Le Gall worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Entomology at The Pennsylvania State University, where she studied the nutritional ecology of slug populations in Mid-Atlantic no-till grain fields. In 2020, she worked as an assistant research professor at ASU’s Global Locust Initiative, where she focused on the nutritional ecology of generalist herbivores.

Throughout her academic career, Le Gall has published numerous research papers in various scientific journals. Her research has focused on topics such as the effects of protein and carbohydrates on insect herbivores, the interactions between locusts and livestock grazing practices, and the nutritional ecology of herbivores in field and forage crops. She has also conducted research on the role of screening pigments in insect eyes and the physiological status of herbivores.

Le Gall is also an experienced instructor, having taught courses related to entomology, ecology, and sustainability. She has taught courses at ASU such as Biology and Society, Introduction to Sustainability, Principles of Ecology, and Insects and Society. She has also served as a guest lecturer in various courses, including Global Ecology and Sustainability, and Ecosystem Services and Management.

Le Gall is a member of the Social Insect Research Group at ASU and is affiliated with the Cease Lab, which focuses on the ecology and management of pest insects. She is also a member of the Entomological Society of America, the Ecological Society of America, and the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology.
