We discuss some of the reasons pollinating insects like bees are important and also the major threats facing bee populations worldwide.

We talk about mites, pesticides and the increase in what biologists call colony collapse which is a scary phenomenon happening everywhere. This is an awesome conversation with a brilliant human being

Gard Otis is a researcher at the University of Guelph, specifically in the School of Environmental Sciences. Gard Otis has written and contributed to over 114 publications and has over 2,623 citations.

His current research includes collaborating with Indian scientists on studies of the Himalayan Apis laboriosa (seasonal migration, taxonomy, evidence of reproductive isolation of sympatric A. dorsata and A. laboriosa) and exploring social bee presence and diversity on several isolated and poorly studied islands in India and Indonesia.

He is also completing past research projects on honey bees and butterflies. One of Gard Otis’s most recent publications, titled “Apis laboriosa confirmed by morphometric and genetic analyses of giant honey bees (Hymenoptera, Apidae) from sites of sympatry in Arunachal Pradesh, North East India,” addresses two potentially different species of giant honey bees endemic to India, Apis dorsata and Apis laboriosa, and their species status.

The research highlights the importance of exploring the differences in behavior, genetics, and morphology of the two species, which remain unresolved. Additionally, Gard Otis has contributed to research on the Mottled Duskywing butterfly, describing 24 microsatellite loci for the species.

He has also explored the morphology of the sternal glands of hornets in the genus Vespa, specifically the van der Vecht gland and the Richards gland, which are not found in other insects. His research has linked the morphology of sternal glands to rubbing behavior by Vespa soror workers during recruitment for group predation.

Gard Otis is a respected researcher in the field of environmental sciences and has contributed significantly to our understanding of bees, butterflies, and hornets.
