My friend Pamela r. Willoughby stops by to discuss her journey as an archaeologist and her discoveries in Tanzania. We discuss the conclusions we can jump to when it comes to ancient technologies and what kind of life people had in the stone age. We also talk about her discoveries of ancient bones that were older than expected as well as the technologies used to determine the age of found artifacts. Pamela R Willoughby is a prominent anthropologist and professor at the University of Alberta. Her expertise lies in the fields of archaeology and paleoanthropology, specifically focusing on the Middle Stone Age, Palaeolithic, and Later Stone Age periods, as well as the Iringa region in Tanzania.

She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley, and her Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Anthropology from the University of Toronto. Her doctoral research focused on the Middle Stone Age in East Africa and its potential relevance to understanding the evolution of modern humans.

Over the course of her career, Willoughby has conducted extensive research in Africa, focusing on the archaeological sites of Magubike and Mlambalasi in Tanzania. She has published numerous articles and books on her research findings, including “Spheroids and Battered Stones in the African Early and Middle Stone Age” and “Stone Age Prehistory of the Songwe River Valley, Lake Rukwa Basin, Southwestern Tanzania.”

In addition to her research, Willoughby is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. She has taught numerous courses in anthropology and archaeology at the University of Alberta and has supervised many graduate students in their research projects.

Her contributions to the field of anthropology have not gone unnoticed, as she has received numerous awards and recognitions for her work. She was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2009 and was awarded the Mungo Park Medal from the Royal Scottish Geographical Society in 2016.
