My friend Edward L. Braun stops by to discuss his time working as a molecular biologist as well as his travels for research. We discuss the role of molecular biologist in helping natural systems and addressing some of the challenges posed by climate change. We talk about the scientific climate in the United States and his lack of luck when working in the field! This is an amazing conversation with a brilliant human being.

Edward L. Braun, a professor of Biology at the University of Florida, is a researcher in the fields of evolutionary biology, phylogenomics, molecular evolution, systematics, and computational biology. Braun’s research has been cited in numerous publications, including a study published in the journal Science in 2008 that used phylogenomic analysis to reveal the evolutionary history of birds.
Other notable contributions include comparative genomics analyses that shed light on the evolution and adaptation of avian genomes, as well as studies on the evolution of flight in ratite birds and the phylogeny of pheasants and partridges. Braun has also conducted research on the stationary phase of yeast cultures, the genome of the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa, and the western painted turtle genome.
